Our top selling games of 2024 revealed!

The year of 2024 has been an amazing one for indie RPGs. There’s been an explosion of new games coming out, and we have had so much fun trying them all! In this article, we’ll reveal our top 5 most popular games of 2024, just in time for the holiday season. Let’s dive into it!

5. Wildsea: Storm & Root

I’ll admit to be the first astonished that an expansion to a game made into our top 5 sellers. But if there was an expansion that was going to make it, this would be the one. Newly released this year Storm & Root is the first expansion for the Wildsea roleplaying game, and it is full of delicious details that make your campaign more… well, wonderous or horrifying depending on your vibe.

Primarily, the hardcover expansion has shipbuilding rules for airships and submersibles, new character options, and a LOT of new places to explore. If you enjoy Wildsea, this one is a no brianer.

4. Blades in the Dark

As our top selling game of 2020 and 2021, it’s no surprise to see that Blades in the Dark still makes the list after all these years. First released in 2017, and a game we ourselves have run and played many times, Blades in the Dark has quickly become a modern classic in the indie RPG world.

For those yet to encounter it, Blades in the Dark is a game about a crew of daring scoundrels seeking their fortunes in the streets of the industrial-fantasy city. You play a criminal gang, and the game has a very satisfying loop of “score” (aka criminal activity), and downtime (where you patch yourselves up to prepare for the next one). The setting of the game is also a highlight, with elements of streampunk and mannerpunk all brought together cohesively into a city teaming with a lot of organized crime.

3. The Monster Overhaul

Yet another game is that is not a game at all, but in fact a massive (massive!!!) bestiary designed for at the table use for a wide range of games you might run in a system of your choice, and is especially designed for old-school fantasy systems.

However, the Monster Overhaul is more than simply a 336 page list of monsters. The charm of the book, and why I think it’s so popular, is how usable it is. The book aims to provide GMs with the tools they need without slowing the session down at all.

2. The Wildsea

Alright, we admit, the appearance of the Storm & Root expansion at number 5 of our list was definitely going to be a give away for what was to come. The Wildsea, a fantasy rpg about being sailors in a world grown over with verdant (and often deadly) greenery, has been truly popular this year, and for a good reason.

If you haven’t encountered Wildsea before, you basically play a motley, rag-tag, and not altogether crew of a chainsaw driven ship cutting its way across dense tree tops to survive and do business in a post-fall world filled with plants.

One of the things I like about Wildsea is how flexible it is while still being very specific in what it is about. You make your own ship, decide on the purpose of your crew, and concoct your individual characters to make your story one of a kind. However, the themes of surviving in a harsh world, the importance of community, and the effects of losing yourself to the Wildsea come through in every game.

1. Thousand Year Old Vampire

Our top selling game of 2022, 2023 and now 2024, A Thousand Year Old Vampire is just having a year, but truly cementing its place as a solo game to look out for. Yep, you heard me right, our top game of the year is played by just one person, and it is perfectly built for it.

In A Thousand Year Old Vampire, you play, unsurprisingly, a vampire, and tell their tale which spans at least hundreds, if not a thousand years. This is not your sexy urban fantasy vampire – this is a true blood drinking horror, although of course just how horrifying you choose to lead them in their story is up to you.

The amazing thing about A Thousand Year Old Vampire is the way it keeps you completely hooked, telling your vampire’s story one tiny piece at a time, and then connecting them together over decades, centuries, and beyond. I guarantee you this game will throw you multiple gut punches, but that’s part of its charm – and of course, part of being a vampire.
